Embocadero Red presented at Finding Vino

embocaderoName of Winery –  Bodegas Pedro Regalado Winery
San Pedro Regalado is a wine co-operative founded in 1958 in the Ribera del Duero region. Combined efforts reap greater rewards than what each winemaker would if working individually. All of the grapes are sourced from the small co-operatively owned vineyards around the village of La Aguilera and many of the vines are 100 years old.

Name of Wine –  Embocadero.

Region – Spain.

Grapes – Tempranillo.

Characteristics – This incredibly powerful Tempranillo spent 14 months aging in new French oak.

Look – Dark burgundy.

Smell – Amazing aromas of wood smoke, mineral, spice box, incense and blackberry make up the nose.
Taste -Similarly dense and plush flavours of dark fruit and spice are present on the palate.

Food Pairing – To go with the red wine: an apple base appetizer using ginger gold apples (an ambrosia or other hard apple would work). Core and cut into slices. Placed in a lemon bath. Extra lemon shaken off to prevent the apple slices from turning brown before serving. Appetizer was prepared by placing apple slices on the bottom of a tooth pick, topped by a half slice of black forest ham and a sizeable piece of bacon cheddar.

Characteristics of wine – Sweet, simple
Look – deep and rich red

Food Pairing – The wine pairs well with appetizers and cheesy food.

Why not try a food that is more popular with Canadians than with any other nationality – Kraft Noodles! It fit the theme of the meeting which was ‘Remember When’. Several attendees agreed that it reminded them of their youth when they were at college or university and Kraft was convenient, although few said they are fans of it nowadays. We experimented by serving half the people a version made the traditional way with milk and margarine, the other half received Kraft made with mayonnaise. The traditional version was voted the best by a large majority.

Food Pairing – Pinotage never has the elegance of a fine burgundy, but it will go with the same sort of dishes as a more robust, rustic Pinot Noir.  Suggested pairings are:  grilled meats, smoked or pulled pork, French Bistro selections as in baked pasta or pizza, strong cheddar or blue cheese, fruits as in figs or blueberries, vegetables as in peppers, portabella mushrooms and dark chocolate.

Served at our meeting on May 3:

1)      Small slice of meaty pizza, which brings in the flavors of meat, cheese and has a French Bistro feel

2)      A piece of strong cheddar cheese; Balderson – Vintners Cheddar Cheese, extra old

3)      Fruit selection of grapes and dried figs

4)      A treat of a piece of Coffee Crisp Chocolate bar, thereby complimenting the coffee and the chocolate of the wine.

Three Thieves Red Wine By Rebel Wines Perfect Combination With Grana Padano

three-thieves-california-pinot-noir-wine-750ml_3790932Name of Winery – Rebel Wine

Name of Wine – Three Thieves – see website http://www.threethieves.com/

Region produced in – California – Napa Valley and Sonoma County

Types of grapes in wine – blend: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petite Sirah, 2% Zinfandel

Characteristics of the wine – LST

Look – displaying characteristic green flavors like bell pepper, eucalyptus and mint

Smell – spicy fruit

Taste  and Finiish– ends to be more fruit-forward and more mellow, with rich dark fruit notes of blueberry and blackberry as well as earth, dust, mocha and cedar.

Food Pairing – It’s superb with porterhouse steak, braised pork belly, hearty lamb stews, portobello mushrooms, grilled burgers and hard strong cheeses.

The cheese was Grana Padano from Italy. This variety has been produced for around 900 years. Grana means grainy because it is dry and grainy. It can be aged up to 2 years, the longer it is aged the more granular it becomes.  It is a hard semi-fat cheese. Strong tasting, it complements and balances the strong flavoured wine.
Any strong flavoured red meat pairs well with this wine. For a change we had fresh sliced corned beef which was very tasty, nothing like the corned beef from a can. It worked very well with this wine.
